How do golf balls actually differ?
You may have cleaned your clubs, your shoes, and have fresh gloves in the bag ready to go, but are you playing with the right golf balls?
How many times have you hit a bad shot into the water or a nearby field and the frustration you’re feeling as you fish about in your bag for another ball has you completely ignoring what kind of golf ball you’re using? Does it even matter what kind of ball you’re using? Do golf balls actually differ?
Well, if you’re still under the impression that all golf balls are white, dimpled, and come with interchangeable brand logos stamped on them, you’d be wrong! Under the cover, each golf ball has a unique core and composition.
We have a whole range of golf balls in the pro shop, from colourful high-vis golf balls to those with eye-catching alignment aids.
What's the point?
So, what’s the point in choosing one kind of golf ball over the next? And why are there so many kinds available? Well, golf is a rich and challenging game, and there are golfers of all kinds of backgrounds and skill levels. From those just earning their first handicap to the seasoned veterans who hit the course multiple times a week.
Certain golf balls are designed to give the player as much forgiveness on their strikes as possible, while others allow better players to get more spin so they can pitch their shots just right.
You may come across the magic word ‘urethane’ before. This is a type of plastic coating given to certain golf balls. Balls with a urethane cover tend to feel softer and offer more spin on pitch shots while non-urethane balls produce a higher, faster flight.
For the high-handicap golfer
If you’re fairly new to golf and you’re wondering which golf ball would be the best to help build up your confidence. Golf balls that have a low-compression core are a lot softer than those of a firm-compression.
This low-compression makes them feel soft when you strike them, even if you don’t hit it entirely out of the center. If you’re new to the game we’d recommend a ball that has plenty of soft feel to help you build up your confidence.
For the consistent ball-striker
Should you be a seasoned singe-figure handicap player, you’ll need to have the right gear on-hand to help you seek out the pin every time you approach the green. Golf balls with a urethane coating allow for better stopping power and manipulation around the greens. If you want maximum control of your golf ball, we’d recommend one with this special plastic urethane coating.
There’s a lot of choice when it comes to getting yourself the right golf ball. If you’re unsure of which kind of ball would be best for your game, we’d be happy to assist and consult you in the pro shop.
